Rhode Island FC is making moves, adding another key piece to its 2025 squad. Defender Cole Dewhurst is the club’s latest signing, pending league and federation approval before he can officially make his debut. A Lancaster, Massachusetts native, he becomes the seventh new addition this season and marks the 31st signing in Rhode Island FC’s history.

Dewhurst’s arrival is no coincidence. The Providence College standout impressed defensively during his collegiate career, catching the attention of Rhode Island FC’s coaching staff. He also follows in the footsteps of Kevin Vang and Nathan Messer, former Friars who have worn the RIFC jersey.
A rising local talent
Bringing in players with strong community ties always sparks excitement, both on and off the field. Head coach and general manager Khano Smith emphasized the importance of adding homegrown talent: "It’s always exciting to bring local talent into the squad. Providence College provides an authentic soccer environment that prepares players for the professional level. Cole developed a lot during his time there, and we’re looking forward to helping him grow as a professional."
Dewhurst is no stranger to the local soccer scene and comes in with a solid foundation. Spending four years at one of the region’s top soccer programs, competing against elite opponents, has shaped him into a highly competitive player. That experience could make a big difference when he steps onto the field for RIFC.
Defensive consistency and room for growth
Dewhurst’s stats prove he was not just a regular at Providence College, but a key pillar in their backline. He started 65 of his 67 career appearances, demonstrating both endurance and reliability.
In his final two seasons, he played a full 90 minutes in nearly every match, a clear sign of his tactical importance and physical conditioning. On top of that, he helped his team hold opponents to an average of 0.95 goals per game, ranking fourth-best in the Big East Conference.
This shows that Dewhurst brings tactical discipline and resilience, two essential qualities for a modern defender. His ability to maintain a high level of intensity throughout matches will be a key asset in the USL Championship.
From New England Revolution to Rhode Island FC
Before making his mark in college soccer, Dewhurst had already built experience within a professional system. He played over 90 matches with the New England Revolution Academy, rising through one of the top youth systems in U.S. soccer.
His development paid off when he earned a promotion to New England Revolution II, the MLS club’s reserve team. In April 2021, Dewhurst made his professional debut in USL League One, taking his first steps into the pro ranks.
Now, he has a chance to establish himself at Rhode Island FC, a club focused on assembling a competitive squad for 2025.
