The 2014 MLS Fantasy Soccer season provided fans with remarkable action and the end of an era in U.S. Soccer. While many fans made sure to follow their favorite teams, those of us that played MLS Fantasy Soccer, learned to appreciate the beautiful game in a different and more unique way.

Some of us struggle to keep up consistently with Fantasy Sports, because of the huge demand it can have on a person’s life. Others, make it their undying passion and make sure to devote as much time and effort into making their team the very best possible.

Entering into 2014, it was only my second time playing MLS Fantasy Soccer. After getting blown out in 2013, I made it my goal (no pun intended) to be better and actually put together a good team. Thankfully, my hard work paid off and I was able to secure an overall record of 24-0-9 and finish second in the table of 12 teams with 72 points. Honestly, I was quite proud of myself.

Being able to find consistency from player took a long time, but once those core five or six players were found, MLS Fantasy Soccer managers were winning like crazy. After looking back at the final point totals for all the players from 2014, it really did not surprise me that Landon Donovan finished with the most total points.

As most of you know, Donovan retired from international and professional soccer in 2014. He capped off his incredible career by winning MLS Cup 2014, 2-1 over the New England Revolution.

Donovan led all active players in MLS with a total of 238 points. He was selected by 20.3% of all active MLS Fantasy Soccer managers and finished off the year valued at $11.9 Million. If there ever was a player that finished their career on a high note on multiple levels, Donovan certainly wins that award.

Aside from Donovan, several other facts stood out as ones many might not have known. For instance:

-Portland Timbers midfielder, Diego Valeri had the second highest total points with 226, yet his team failed to make the playoffs. It appears that even when one player over contributes, it is not always enough to make your team post season worthy.

-Of the Top 10 highest scoring players in MLS Fantasy Soccer, Javier Morales of Real Salt Lake received the least amount of selections on managers teams. He was only selected by 10% of all active managers. Morales finished the season with 200 points, placing him fifth overall and a final value of $10.8 Million.

-One thing that certainly surprised many, was the number one player selected the most by all managers, Seattle Sounders rookie defender, Dylan Remick. Valued at an impressive $4.1 Million, Remick led all active players with being selected by 33.9% of all managers. He accumulated just 31 points on the season, but was cheap and occasionally saw the field, thus making him someone people were fine with drafting.

These facts are just a small sample size of what all happened during the 2014 MLS Fantasy Soccer season. Stay tuned for more articles similar to this as the 2015 MLS Fantasy Soccer season gets ready to launch in the next month.
